X Factor winner to quit school

Year nine student Marlisa Punzalan is unlikely to rejoin her classmates after winning The X Factor because of contractual commitments.

Tired and exhausted X Factor winner Marlisa Punzalan intends to quit high school to concentrate on her singing career.

Punzalan said she has not attended Mercy Catholic College in Chatswood for about two months and is unlikely to rejoin her year nine classmates for the rest of the year, at least.

The 15-year-old scored a contract with Sony Music and will also be a support act for Guy Sebastian on his Madness tour in 2015 for winning the Seven Network series.

Singer-songwriter Dean Ray was runner-up and sibling boy band Brothers3 was third.

Punzalan said it's almost impossible to return to school because of the commitments to Sony Music, the Seven Network, touring and her new found fame.

"Now that I have won I will probably be doing home schooling from now on," Punzalan told AAP on Tuesday.

"I have to organise things with Sony first and sort out a schedule and my mum is happy with that.

"It will be difficult to go back to school with this fame."

During her time on The X Factor, Punzalan had been receiving home schooling every Wednesday.

She admits to falling only slightly behind in her classes but that seems to pale into insignificance compared to winning The X Factor.

She is the third female in a row to win the series in three years after Samantha Jade in 2012 and Dami Im last year.

Punzalan, though, was never meant to audition for The X Factor.

Her intention was to try out for The Voice Kids, which was restricted to children aged eight to 14, but she missed out on the age criteria by a month.

Punzalan's debut single Stand By Me, which was immediately released on iTunes after Monday's finale, was sitting at No.2 on Tuesday.

Punzalan said Sony Music already has an album planned but she's had no say on the cover tracks she will be singing.

"Now I have to work on my album and that will be released soon," she said.

"They've already chosen the songs for my album."
