Two key crossbench senators aren't happy that the Abbott government is sticking with cuts to family tax benefits to pay for its childcare package.

Independent South Australian senator Nick Xenophon believes there's merit in the package that was announced in the budget, but cutting benefits once a child turns six is "not a good way to negotiate".

Independent Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie says the parliament is being held to ransom again, because the government is "giving with one hand and taking from the other".
