Crossbench senator Nick Xenophon will move to overthrow new "dangerous" drone rules, concerned that lax regulations could lead to mid-air collisions.

The regulations - which came into force in September - allow commercial operators to operate unmanned aircraft weighing less than two kilograms with reduced regulatory requirements.

Senator Xenophon will move a disallowance motion in the Senate next week, saying in a statement on Thursday the consequences of serious damage to other aircraft and a threat to flight safety must not be ignored.
