XLR8 dominates Melbourne to Hobart

XLR8 dominated the east-coast race in the Melbourne to Hobart and finished only 21 minutes ahead of west-coast winner Spirit of Downunder.

XLR8 has made the most of rough conditions to take line honours in the Melbourne to Hobart yacht race.

Ray Shaw's Reichel Pugh 46 yacht crossed the line at 3.20am on Tuesday morning, winning in two days, 14 hours and 50 minutes.

XLR8 finished 33 nautical miles ahead of Cartouche in the east-coast race.

Laurie Ford's Spirit of Downunder won the westcoaster, finishing only 35 minutes behind XLR8.

Spirit of Downunder blew out its mast head spinnaker, but overcame that setback to win in two days 15 hours and 25 minutes.

Turbulence was next in the west-coast race, more than three hours behind.

Strong winds gusting to 40 knots meant seas rose up to three metres on the west coast of Tasmania on Monday afternoon, with conditions only slightly better for vessels in the east-coast race.

At just 34 feet, Seduction appears to have won all three handicap honours in the west-coast race.

In the east-coast race, Cartouche won the premier handicap division.
