Yacht smashes on rocks in Sydney's north

A man has been charged with high range PCA after the yacht he was captaining ran into the rocks off the popular Balmoral Beach in Sydney's north.

A day on Sydney Harbour has turned into a costly affair for an allegedly drunk boatie whose yacht ran aground off Sydney's picturesque Balmoral Beach.

Five people were aboard the 29-foot yacht, enjoying the 33 degree sunshine on the long weekend when trouble struck on Sunday evening at Rocky Point off the popular Balmoral Beach on Sydney's north shore.

Police were told the yacht ran out of fuel and another boat was helping when the yacht smashed into the rocks.

The 28-year-old captain sustained minor injuries trying to get off the yacht.

When breath tested, he allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.165, more than three times the legal limit.

He was charged with operating a vessel with high range PCA.

He is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on October 27.

The yacht's owner is expected to move the boat from its troublesome resting place on Monday.

Marine Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Mark Hutchings, said this incident is a disappointing start to the boating season.

"It is really disappointing to see this type of behaviour and police will continue to be out in force to keep everyone on our waterways safe," Det Supt Hutchings said.
