Joe Torre, the former New York Yankees manager who will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July, will have his number retired by the club in August.
The Yankees announced Thursday that they will make Torre's number 6 jersey the 17th number to be retired by the fabled Major League Baseball franchise, which owns a record 27 World Series crowns.
Torre, who mentored the team to four World Series titles in a tenure that ran from 1996 through 2007, will become the third Yankees manager to have his number retired by the team, joining Casey Stengel, who guided New York to seven World Series titles, and Billy Martin.
After Torre's honor, the Yankees will have only one single-digit jersey number available and that is number 2, currently worn by Derek Jeter, the 20-year Yankees star who is calling it quits after this season and who is likely to inspire a similar jersey number retirement ceremony in the future.
During Torre's time guiding the Yankees, they went 1,173-767, his win total trailing only the club record 1,460 won by Joe McCarthy over 16 seasons. The team won six American League titles under Torre.
Among the Yankee playing legends whose numbers are retired are Babe Ruth (3), Lou Gehrig (4), Joe DiMaggio (5), Mickey Mantle (7), Roger Maris (9) and Reggie Jackson (44).
