Yates grabs Paris-Nice stage win and lead

Simon Yates won the seventh stage of the 2018 Paris-Nice cycling race to grab the overall leader's yellow jersey with one stage remaining.

Simon Yates, racing for Australian team Mitchelton-Scott), won Saturday's seventh stage of the 2018 Paris-Nice road race.

The British cyclist earned the overall leader's yellow jersey with one stage remaining.

On a day filled with tough climbs in difficult weather, Yates made his winning push in the final kilometre, crossing the line eight seconds ahead of the second and third-place riders.

"It was a very difficult day from the beginning but the guys looked after me very well," Yates said.

"At one moment, me and Roman Kreuziger decided it was the moment to squeeze the race a bit and we went.

"I attacked from there and as we saw I had good legs."

Belgium's Dylan Teuns (BMC) finished second, just in front of Spain's Jon Izaguirre Insausti (Bahrain-Merida).

Fourth place went to Insausti's brother, Gorka Izagirre Insausti of the same team, coming in five seconds behind his younger sibling.

Belgian rider Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) took the polka dot jersey for best climber.

This was the seventh career stage win for Yates, who completed the 175km stage in 5hr 2min 54sec.

The 25-year-old leads the general classification with a time of 27:29.02 - 11sec ahead of of Jon Izagirre Insausti, as they head into Sunday's eighth and final stage, which features six climbs.
