Hundreds of supporters of same sex marriage have celebrated in Perth as it was announced Australians had emphatically voted 'yes'.

Traditionally politically conservative West Australians heavily backed the 'yes' vote, with the 63.7 per cent vote higher than the 61.6 per cent national figure.

That was the second-highest 'yes' result among the six states in the postal vote, and third highest including the ACT.

The vote was delivered at 7am Perth time and hundreds cheered wildly at a piazza in Northbridge where a large screen showed the results.

Shannon Brugger, 22, was in tears as she hugged her partner Taylah Sewell, 22.

Ms Sewell said the pair had been to rallies leading up to the vote and it had been a difficult period emotionally hearing what "the mass" of No voters were saying about the gay and lesbian community.

Ms Brugger said the vote meant more than just being able to marry and she believed it took a change of law to change people's minds, especially when so many were "set in their old ways".

"We are also citizens, we're not second class people, we are people just like anyone else and it shouldn't be something that should be voted on really, there are so many more things you could have done with the money," she told AAP.

Marziya Mohammedali, who was at the piazza, said it was ridiculous people were not equal and a discussion was even being had about whether members of the LGBTIQ community should be allowed to marry whoever they want.

In the surrounding streets, same-sex couples cheered and walked hand-in-hand, including those on their way to work.

The Court Hotel, known as a gay and lesbian bar, was crowded at 8am with beers and champagne to celebrate and bore a large banner saying LOVE WINS.

Every one of Perth's 16 federal electorates voted in favour of same sex marriage.

The strongest 'yes' vote was 72.2 per cent in Deputy Liberal Leader and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop's Curtin electorate, which includes Perth's wealthiest suburbs.

Conservative Canning Liberal MP Andrew Hastie campaigned against same sex marriage but his electorate voted 60.2 per cent in favour of the changes.

Three electorates returned a Yes vote below 60 per cent.

Those included the massive Liberal-held rural electorates of Durack, which includes the Kimberley and Pilbara regions, and O'Connor, comprising the Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance regions, with 59.2 per cent and 56.2 per cent respectively.
