A young Australian Rules football player has died after suffering a heart attack during a match in Victoria.

Northern Saints Football Club player Mohamed Ali Jamil Allouche, known as Moe Joe, collapsed after kicking a goal during the game at Fawkner, in Melbourne's north, on Saturday.

The 22-year-old was rushed to hospital but died hours laster.

The reserves match against Avondale Heights was subsequently called off.

Mr Allouche's club issued a statement after he was taken to The Alfred hospital, asking people to pray for him.

"We thank all those people who worked feverishly on him, from the wonderful trainers of both clubs ... and the selfless work of those ambulance and fire brigade who responded today," Northern Saints wrote on Facebook.

As news of the tragedy filtered through the community, tributes were posted online.

"R.I.P young man you were taken way to (sic) soon," Nicole Nugent wrote on Facebook.

"Doing what you loved, rest easy young fella."

Trish Benigno wrote: "He was a beautiful, beautiful boy."

The Essendon District Football League sent its deepest condolences to Mr Allouche's family, his teammates and all those affected by the tragedy.
