Young Giant to miss AFL season

GWS teenager Paul Ahern will need a right knee reconstruction after hurting the joint at training and will miss the entire 2016 AFL season.

GWS teenager Paul Ahern will need a knee reconstruction, meaning he must wait another year to make his AFL debut.

The No.7 pick in the 2014 national draft hurt his right knee on Monday morning at training.

Ahern, 19, will meet a knee specialist this week and will probably be sidelined for the whole season.

The highly rated midfielder was having a strong pre-season after good form last year for the Giants' reserves.

"We've got Paul's long-term welfare as our first thought, so we'll now look to determine the best course of action to ensure he can return stronger than ever," Giants official David Joyce told the club website.

Ahern earned All-Australian selection at under-18 level.
