A young man and his dog have escaped injury after their car slid off the edge of a snowy mountain in southern NSW.

The man in his 20s and his canine companion were exploring the Brindabella Ranges, which separate NSW and the ACT, on Saturday night when the car slid down an embankment.

He managed to free himself and his dog from the vehicle before helping firefighters track them down by telling rescuers when he could see their lights and hear their sirens.
