Young NSW mother charged over road tragedy

A young woman has been charged over a car crash in northern NSW that killed her two-year-old daughter and left her 11-month-old son with critical injuries.

A young NSW mother allegedly driving on a suspended learner licence has been charged over a crash that killed her two-year-old daughter and left her 11-month-old son fighting for life.

Tori Shipman, 20, was behind the wheel on the night of August 17 when her sedan rolled down an embankment on the New England Highway near Willow Tree, south of Tamworth, police will allege.

Her young daughter Jannali died at the scene and her baby son Atticus remains in Newcastle Children's Hospital after suffering critical injuries.

Police allege one of the children was incorrectly restrained.

It's understood the children were returning home after visiting their father Dennis Brown in Tamworth.

Ms Shipman, from Aberdeen in the NSW Hunter region, was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital in a stable condition but was later released.

She has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

In addition, Ms Shipman was charged with driving whilst disqualified and driving with an unrestrained passenger between six months and four years.

She appeared before Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday and was granted conditional bail to reappear on October 28.
