Your moggie a major threat: wildlife group

Wildlife Victoria has thrown its support behind a 24-hour domestic cat curfew, saying it helps prevent the loss of native species.

It's time to recognise your moggie has a not-so-secret life as a wildlife assassin.

The proof is the many feathered and fury victims that domestic cats gift to their owners, Wildlife Victoria says in support of a 24-hour cat curfew.

The group receives many reports of birds, possums and other native animals attacked by cats.

"Many reports are about the `neighbour's` cat and we suspect this is due to a feeling of embarrassment that their cat has caused such destruction," chief executive Karen Masson said.

Australia's 20 million domestic and feral cats pose a major threat to native species and this needs to be better managed, she said.

A new national feral cat plan recommends more councils adopt domestic cat containment policies, requiring owners to confine cats to within homes or properties.

It has sparked concern among cat lovers and some vets who say this would be stressful for some cats.

"This is about saving the things that we're losing," Threatened Species Commissioner Gregory Andrews told ABC Radio.

"Bandicoots are almost almost extinct ... we need to make them safe."
