Youth Allowance changes pass first hurdle

Legislation to make it easier for young Australians to receive financial support from the government passed the lower house on Thursday.

It will be easier for young regional Australians to receive financial support from the government while they study, under proposed changes.

The amendments alter the criteria for a young person to be deemed independent - and qualify for Youth Allowance - by increasing the maximum amount their parents can earn to $160,000, up from $150,000.

The changes, which passed on Thursday just before the government adjourned the lower house amid a battle over the Liberal leadership, also introduce a $10,000 per child amount to increase the parental cut-off for larger families.
