Youth have Swans sitting pretty in AFL

Sydney sit third on the ladder, with the AFL club's youngsters having played a key role in a six-match winning streak.

Aliir Aliir's return is the latest reminder of Sydney's depth that has the AFL team poised to be a premiership contender again.

Aliir played in round four, then was recalled in round 13, but he was otherwise stuck in the seconds during the opening half of the Swans' season.

The 23-year-old made the most of his chance against West Coast, producing a couple of clutch goal-saving efforts last Friday in defence.

Youngsters Oliver Florent, George Hewett, Tom Papley, Will Hayward, Ben Ronke and Tom McCartin also stepped up under immense pressure during Sydney's 15-point win over the Eagles.

Getting the best out of inexperienced players has been a key part of the Swans' recent run of finals appearances, which looks set to continue barring a drop-off after the bye.

Sydney sit third on the ladder amid a six-match winning streak, leaving them well placed to make the finals for a ninth-straight year.

Yet again there is fierce competition for spots at the SCG, with coach John Longmire unwilling to gift any player - regardless of age or reputation - a game.

"All the younger boys have been playing quality roles for us all year," Harry Cunningham said.

"Aliir was absolutely outstanding down back, with the way he read the play and the impact he had in the air.

"We've got a lot of guys playing some really good footy in the seconds. Aliir's a great example of somebody who had to bide his time.

"We've got some great depth at the moment and it makes a quality football club."

Longmire will soon have even more selection headaches. Veteran Jarrad McVeigh had missed the West Coast clash because of a tight calf, while key position players Sam Reid and Lewis Melican are also expected to return after the bye.

The Swans have this weekend off before facing reigning premiers Richmond on Thursday, with the Etihad Stadium match shaping as the biggest test of their premiership credentials yet.

"Things are tracking pretty well at the moment, but obviously, we've always got room for improvement," Cunningham said.

"I don't know if beating West Coat was our best win, but we probably haven't put together four quarters of pressure in one game like we did against West Coast."
