Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wants to repair relations with Australia before he leaves office in 2014.

Relations with Jakarta have been frosty since revelations about phone-tapping by Australia in 2009 of both Mr Yudhoyono and his wife, among other top-level officials.

A report in the Weekend Australian cited Mrs Yudhoyono's rising political presence as the reason for listening in on her conversations.

The president has told The Australian while the dispute over the story had hurt him personally, he is determined to repair the relationship as part of his legacy for Indonesia at the completion of his second and final term in 2014.

Mr Yudhoyono said this needed to happen through steps agreed on by Australia and Indonesia and in a way that satisfied his domestic needs.
