Zimbabwe survive scare to beat Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka came close but were unable to overhaul Zimbabwe's total of 290 in the second match of the one-day tri-series in Dhaka.

Zimbabwe have survived a Thisara Perera scare to beat Sri Lanka by 12 runs and secure their first victory in the one-day tri-series.

Tendai Chatara claimed career-best figures of 4-33, including the prized scalp of Perera, to set up the victory.

Sikandar Raza steered Zimbabwe to a challenging 6-29, hitting a fluent 81 not out from 67 balls.

Sri Lanka were in a precarious situation at 5-181 in the 34th over but Perara brought victory into sight, smashing the ball to all corners of the park.

He was dismissed after striking a 37-ball 64 when his side were 16 runs from victory. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 278 in 48.1 overs.

Kusal Perera gave Sri Lanka a decent start but Tendai Chatara inspired Zimbabwe, making inroads at regular intervals.

Raza, however, brought relief, removing Perera who hit eight fours and two sixes on his way to 80 off 83.

Blessing Muzurabani and Kyle Jarvis removed captain Angelo Mathews (42) and Dinesh Chandimal (34) respectively in four overs as Zimbabwe sensed a victory.

Thisara Perera then resisted. He counter-attacked in aggressive manner to keep Zimbabwe at bay before Chatara dismissed him.

For Zimbabwe, Raza's half-century was studded with eight fours and one six, most of which came in the last powerplay to steer the side reach closer to 300.

His free-hitting prowess helped the side gather 53 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the last five overs.

Opener Hamilton Masakadza scored 73 off 83, hitting 10 fours. He and Solomon Mire (34) combined for a 75-run opening partnership in 13 overs to lay the platform after Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews' decision to bowl first.
