Zone trial would 'destroy' AFL pre-season

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says he would be against the AFL ever introducing zones to combat growing congestion in the game.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has told the AFL doomsayers to chill out and have a cup of tea, declaring pre-season campaigns would be destroyed if zones were ever trialled.

Former Eagles coach John Worsfold caused a stir earlier this week when he revealed the Laws of the Game committee had raised the prospect of introducing zones in a bid to clear growing congestion.

Although Worsfold said the idea of restricting players to certain parts of the field was far fetched and unlikely to take flight, he said it might be worth trialling during a pre-season.

Melbourne coach Paul Roos and Collingwood counterpart Nathan Buckley aren't fond of the zoning concept, and Lyon joined them in voicing his displeasure.

"I think all the panic merchants need to have a cup of tea and a scone and just relax and let's see how we go," Lyon said on Wednesday.

"I think the game's in great shape. I'm sure we'll have a great finals series again this year.

"My take is, and I'm really firm on this, that the uniqueness and magnificence of Australian Rules football always finds a way."

Lyon said it would be hard for teams to trial a concept like zones without compromising the season proper.

"Let's destroy everyone's pre-season," Lyon replied when asked if the concept should be trialled.

"We'd be the only elite competition in the world that goes into a brutal competition not practising the rules they're going to play in the season.

"I struggle with that concept, even though we're there to experiment."
