Being transgender in the Tiwi Islands


In the remote community of the Tiwi Islands just off Darwin lives a large population of Aboriginal transgender: men who identify as women.

Locals say as many as 5 per cent of the population considers themselves 'sister girls' as they are called, including children, as young as six.

While the sister girls say they are essentially accepted here in the community, there are still serious problems for them here like domestic violence and rape.
