The Dallas Cowboys still have Tony Romo on the 53-man roster.
Sunday was the first day that the Cowboys could have placed Romo on injured reserve and the team opted not to do so.
At the same time, the signing of veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez was officially announced and young quarterback Jameill Showers was waived.
Sanchez was signed for one season to be the backup after being released by the Denver Broncos on Saturday.
Rookie Dak Prescott will be the starter when the Cowboys face the New York Giants in their season opener on September 11.
Romo suffered a compression fracture in his back in a pre-season game against Seattle on August 25 and it is estimated that he will be sidelined six-to-10 weeks.
If Romo is placed on injured reserve, he will be forced to miss the first eight weeks of the NFL season and won't be eligible to play until November.
The Cowboys could choose not to place Romo on injured reserve and name him as one of their inactives each week until he recovers.
