Interview with Dr John Powers on Tibet

Dateline speaks with Tibet expert Dr John Powers, who says China’s treatment of traditional Tibetan culture is “extremely repressive”.

Dr John Powers is a Research Professor in the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University, where he focuses on Tibetan culture and history.

He has published more than a dozen books, focusing on subjects like Tibetan Buddhism and the collision of ancient Tibetan practices and culture with modern China.

His next work, The Buddha Party, will look at how the Chinese use "propaganda to define Tibetan Buddhist belief and sway opinion within the country and abroad". It is expected to be published in the next year.
