Mike Carey

Mike Carey's long association with Dateline saw him work as a reporter and then the program's Executive Producer.

For the 30th anniversary, he explains what makes the show special and recalls how Dateline got a world first in May 1989.

He and the Dateline team managed to secure the first TV interview with Aung San Suu Kyi, and they were the first TV crew to be allowed into Myanmar, then known as Burma, in three decades.

She spoke about her political ambitions and drive for better human rights, knowing little of what was to follow for her in the years ahead.
