An encounter with two couch-surfing German students in Beijing led video journalist Ryan Jasper on a filmmaking trip to Tibetan communities.

Ryan Jasper's report on the replacement of old Tibetan mud brick homes with cheaper Chinese replacements, and what this means for Tibetan culture, details the complexity of the clash between modernity and tradition in 21st century China.

"The suppression that happens of Tibetan culture and traditions is very strong and increasingly strong in recent times," he tells Brittany Evans.

His personal highlight? Playing basketball with monks, at 4,000 metres altitude, on a snow covered mountaintop.

"That was a ball of fun!"
