Producer Kylie Grey and reporter Amos Roberts’ recent Dateline story on the 2017 French presidential election observed the struggles of citizens living in the poorest town in France, Denain, which has been described as a barometer of a changing France - one that is shifting its support towards far right political parties.

In the latest episode of 'The Intern Diaries', Amos tells Dateline intern Samuel Yang that Denain was a depressing place to film in. The town has a dying economy and a life expectancy of only 58.

“There were a lot of teenage parents I saw around town with their babies," he says. "It’s a pretty miserable place for a lot of people.”

Spending more than a week filming in Northern France wasn’t a pleasant culinary experience either. Amos says the food was “pretty shocking...the best food I was served in Denain came from one of the Moroccan families we were filming.”
