Fingerprints from kids could breach rights

Parliament's human rights committee is concerned about draft laws that would allow the collection of fingerprints and facial data from kids.

Collecting fingerprints and facial data from children may be against their human rights, a parliamentary committee has warned.

Draft laws before parliament would remove restrictions on the collection of biometrics from children under 15 without their parent or guardian present.

But the human rights committee in a report on Tuesday said such measures could be incompatible with the obligations to consider the best interests of a child.
