He's known as the Gaza doctor and was the first Palestinian doctor to be hired by an Israeli hospital.
Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish was born and raised in a refugee camp in Gaza and spent 20 years working as an infertility specialist at an Israeli hospital.
In 2008, he lost his wife to leukaemia and just a few months later three of his daughters were killed when his house in northern Gaza was shelled during an Israeli incursion.
Doctor Abuelaish is the author of the best selling book "I Shall Not Hate", a title he chose to highlight his opposition to all forms of violence.
Despite the conflict in Gaza, he remains hopeful there can eventually be peace in the region.
Dr Abuelaish now lives in Toronto and has helped organise a humanitarian mission which will see 100 children flown to Canada to receive medical treatment.
He told Greg Dyett what prompted him to convince others to help.
