Govt aims to reduce indigenous smokers

The Turnbull government is committing almost $184 million to help reduce smoking among indigenous people.

The Turnbull government is committing $183.7 million to help reduce the impacts of tobacco-related deaths among indigenous people.

Indigenous Health Minister Ken Wyatt said it is still a "sickening fact" that smoking is still responsible for around one in five preventable deaths among indigenous people.

"This investment in the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program highlights our long-term commitment to Closing the Gap in health inequality," Mr Wyatt said in a statement on Sunday.
