Early changes to diet, lifestyle and exercise routine can help manage blood sugar levels, by ensuring the cells that produce the hormone insulin - which regulates blood sugar levels - aren't worn out.
Nevertheless, some people will still be vulnerable, particularly if the disease is in the family and if their background is Indigenous, Pacific Islander, subcontinental Indian or Chinese.
