Jones aiming for World Tour cycling deal

After a succession of podium finishes, Brenton Jones has finally won the Australian criterium title for the first time.

Now he's achieved one elusive goal, a much bigger target is driving Australian cyclist Brenton Jones.

The Victorian won the Australian criterium title for the first time on Friday night, narrowly beating Tristan Ward in Ballarat.

It followed Jones' succession of podium finishes in the event.

Three-time defending champion Caleb Ewan was missing, with Jones' sprint rival deciding to target the Australian championships road race on Sunday in Buninyong.

But Ewans' absence did not diminish the importance or popularity of Jones' win.

While Jones did not have to contend with Ewan, he secured the win without team support.

It comes at the start of an important season for Jones, who is yet to secure a World Tour contract in his career.

Prominent Australian coach Dave Sanders said last month he was surprised that Jones has not secured a deal at road cycling's top level.

"I'm still chasing that World Tour contract and I hope to have that in 2020, that's my goal," Jones said.

"My manager and I are working towards that and this year's started off quite well.

"A result like this is going to give me confidence for the rest of the season and I'm happy to be in a French team that gives me great opportunity overseas."

The Delko Marseille rider hopes to ride for the composite national team at next month's Herald Sun Tour and then head overseas.

Jones started the Paris-Roubaix classic last season and that is an important goal again for the European spring.
