Juno star Page comes out

Ellen Page has told a Las Vegas convention she was tired of lying about being gay.

Ellen Page has announced she is gay.

The 26-year-old, who is best known for starring in 2007 indie teen flick Juno, has previously been linked to her The East co-star Alexander Skarsgard.

At a conference in Las Vegas on Friday, addressing educators and counsellors who work with gay youth, the Oscar-nominated star took the opportunity to come out.

"I'm here today because I am gay, and because maybe I can make a difference," she addressed the hundreds of people in attendance, according to The Los Angeles Times.

"I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility. I also do it selfishly, because I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission."

Page's brave speech was met by a standing ovation from the 600-strong crowd.

She admitted that Hollywood's "standards" of beauty and success made her feel like she couldn't "be authentic".

"I suffered for years because I was scared to be out," she said.

"My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."

The Human Rights Campaign's 'Time to THRIVE' conference at Bally's was the first of its kind, promoting safety, inclusion and well-being for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Page can next be seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, which also stars Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult and is due for release in May.
