Closing our live coverage
We will return tomorrow with more live coverage following the developments in the wake of the United States and Israel's attack on Iran.
Tonight:
- Strikes on Iran have plunged the Middle East into a new phase of conflict, with President Donald Trump saying the operation would end what he described as a security threat to the United States
- The action comes against the backdrop of talks between Washington and Tehran aimed at resolving a longstanding dispute over Iran's nuclear program. Trump has vowed Iran will not obtain a nuclear weapon. Iran has repeatedly denied it is pursuing nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear activities are for civilian energy purposes
- Trump described the operation as "massive and ongoing". Iranian officials said they had done "everything necessary to prevent war" and would "respond decisively"
- Explosions were reported elsewhere in the region, including in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Israel, along with other countries including Jordan and Qatar, said Iranian missiles had been intercepted.
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia supports efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon
