One Nation announces Longman candidate

Caboolture local Matthew Stephen will stand for One Nation in the federal by-election in Longman.

Caboolture local Matthew Stephen will stand for One Nation in the federal by-election for the Queensland seat of Longman.

Pauline Hanson's party on Thursday announced Mr Stephen as their candidate for the seat, which has been left vacant by the resignation of Labor's MP Susan Lamb over her dual citizenship.

"I'm very proud to say he is ready to fight for the people of Longman and I think he would make an excellent member of parliament," Senator Hanson said in a statement.

Mr Stephen also stood for the party in the Labor-held seat of Sandgate, in Brisbane's north, in the November 25 state election.

He previously come under fire for a series of racist and homophobic posts he made on Facebook.

Mr Stephen has also come close to bankruptcy and had his Queensland Building and Construction Commission trades licence temporarily suspended seven times for not paying his fees and creditors.

"We've been down to the last 54 cents in my bank account," Mr Stephen told The Australian in October.

"I know how hard it is to pay the power to keep the lights on. It definitely hasn't been easy.

"I can have a voice for people who have been in my situation."

One Nation overlooked state leader and Liberal National Party defector Steve Dickson for the candidature despite the party indicating after the Queensland election the ousted Buderim MP was perfectly poised to run for a federal seat.
