In California, police report eight of nine skiers missing after an avalanche have died.

Officials say 15 people were caught in the slide, which struck mountains near Lake Tahoe during a snowstorm.

After hours of rescue operations, six people have been rescued, with two sent to hospital.

Nevada County Sheriff's Office's Sheriff Shannan Moon says recovery teams continue to search for the remaining skier.

"Eight of the additional nine additional skiers have been located deceased. We are still looking for one of the members at this time. Due to the ongoing challenges of the weather, the avalanche conditions, the effort remains ongoing as well as our search for the remaining skier."

A bottle of cooking oil is around 2,300 Afghanis ($37), and the small one costs 600 Afghanis ($13.50 AUD), while a sack of rice costs about 4,000 Afghanis ($90.60 AUD). We cannot afford to buy rice. It has been a long time since we last bought any. Prices are very high, and we, the poor, have nothing. Nothing is within our means."
