North Queensland residents - from Ayr to Mackay including the Whitsundays - are being urged to prepare for Tropical Cyclone Kirrily.
Winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour are predicted for the Whitsunday Islands and coastal areas between Townsville and St Lawrence as the cyclone heads towards the coast.
It was initially predicted to hit the coast between Cardwell and Airlie Beach on Thursday night as a category 3 system.
But the Bureau of Meteorology says the system has slowed and could cross the coast as a category 2 between Townsville and Ayr on Thursday night or early on Friday morning.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles says the areas likely to be hit by Cyclone Kirrily are as prepared as they can be.
"These are parts of the state that are well accustomed to cyclones of this intensity and their mayors have confirmed with us that they are ready and well prepared. Tropical Cyclone impacts are likely to begin from tonight, particularly in the Whitsunday Islands. After the cyclone crosses the coast it's likely to weaken into a tropical low but have very high levels of rainfall associated with it and so depending on its path that rainfall is likely to cause flooding in parts of the state. "

Donald Trump has won the New Hampshire Republican primary election over challenging candidate Nikki Haley, his second victory on the path to securing the GOP's presidential nomination.
The former president has further asserted his dominance over the party, becoming the first Republican to sweep competitive votes in both Iowa and New Hampshire since 1976 as he heads towards a likely rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden in November.
Nikki Haley had hoped the north-eastern state of more moderate voters could propel her to a win that might loosen Mr Trump's iron grip on the Republican Party, but she now seems unlikely to pose a significant threat to the former president.
But Ms Haley says the fight is not over yet, assuring her supporters she won't be backing down.
"With Donald Trump, you have one bout of chaos after another. This court case, that controversy, this tweet, that senior moment, you can't fix Joe Biden's chaos with Republican chaos. So our fight is not over. Because we have a country to save. In the next two months, millions of voters in over 20 states will have their say."
No Republican candidate has ever won both state primaries without going on to secure the party nomination.

The ACCC is urging Taylor Swift fans trying to secure last-minute tickets to the upcoming Australian leg of her world tour to protect themselves from online scams.
The consumer watchdog has received more than 270 reports of people being scammed into purchasing bogus tickets since June last year.
The scams involve hackers compromising social media accounts and then targeting victims on that account’s friends list.
With fans losing more than $135,000 to the scam so far, the ACCC expects that figure to rise.

Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska has made history, becoming the first qualifier to make the semifinals of the Australian Open since 1978.
The 23-year-old beat the Czech Republic's Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4.
She says she's proud of her win.
"I think it's nice to make a history because at that time I still didn't born, 'cause I was 2000 so it's nice generation, it's nice to make a history and I'm super happy, really happy, tired."
Meanwhile, Hubert Hurkacz is facing off against Daniil Medvedev.
Last night, Aryna Sabalenka cruised through to book her place in the semi-finals, while Jannik Sinner also notched a victory in straight sets.
And Nick Kyrgios has taken to social media, saying he wants to clear up retirement rumours.
Previously he had hinted his time playing tennis may be over, saying he wouldn't be representing Australia at the Paris Olympics.
But now, he's posted on his Instagram story saying he's not retiring and will be lighting up courts soon.
