Outgoing Premier Steven Miles is confirming he hopes to stay on as Labor's leader in Queensland after the LNP claimed victory at the polls last night.

It was the end of almost a decade in office for the Labor party, which is now set for four years in opposition.

Under state Labor rules the leadership position is automatically thrown open to challengers for the top job.

Current leader Steven Miles is hoping his colleagues will back him again.

"We need to see the count concluded and determine who is in our caucus, the makeup of our caucus, then our caucus will meet and elect office bearers. I'll remain the leader of our party until at least that point in time and I would like to, if they choose to support me I would like to stay on as Labor's leader beyond then but ultimately that is a decision for them. "

Queensland Labor's deputy leader Cameron Dick wouldn't say whether he wants the role when asked this morning on ABC.

Overcrowded prisons have triggered plans for the Northern Territory to move male and female inmates as part of emergency measures.

Corrections Commissioner Matthew Varley has ordered a mass prisons shift after NT inmate numbers hit a record high of more than 2300 on Friday.

Under his directions, 10 extra prisoners will be placed into Darwin watch house, 20 more inmates sent to Darwin prison and 20 others added to the Alice Springs Reintegration Facility.

The first stages of the plan were expected to be executed this weekend.

A 2022 report by the Justice Reform Initiative found incarceration rates in the NT were four times the Australian average for adults and five times higher for children.

The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults in prison has risen by 34.4 per cent over the past decade.

Georgia's ruling party is claiming victory in a contested election the country's pro-western opposition says amounts to a constitutional coup.

The nations' international ties have been a key point of debate with parties split over whether to strengthen relations with Europe or Russia.

Leader of the pro-European United National Movement, Tina Bokuchava, says the results were falsified and the election was stolen.

With 70 per cent of votes counted the election commission said Georgian Dream is leading at 53 per cent, enough to govern but short of an absolute majority.

Georgia's prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze says the people have spoken.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has flown back early from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa to attend an Italian-Australian event in the inner west Sydney suburb of Leichardt.

The Prime Minister says as someone with Italian heritage he's proud to represent various communities in his Grayndler electorate, including Leichardt, Petersham and Haberfield where Italian-Australian culture thrives, particularly through small business enterprises.

He reiterated the valuable contribution of migrants who have come to Australia to create jobs and economic activity.

"At a time where there is much division in the world, Australia can be a microcosm for the world. That shows that people of different religion, different ethnicities, different backgrounds, different genders, different sexualities can come together and be enriched by the diversity."

And in sport,

Australia's former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has suffered a devastating first-round submission loss to unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev.

Whittaker's prospects of securing another world title shot nosedived in Abu Dhabi after he tapped out at the 3:34 mark of the opening round.

The 33-year-old Australian landed a couple of leg kicks but didn't have the chance to throw a punch.

The former champion was taken down after just 15 seconds.
