  • ASIO boss tells SBS the former politician who engaged in espionage for a foreign country was a serving member of an Australian parliament;
  • Former US President Donald Trump wins the Missouri Republican presidential nomination with nearly 98 per cent of support;
  • And in cricket, Australia wins the first Test against New Zealand.

The unidentified former politician who engaged in espionage for a foreign country was a serving member of an Australian parliament when they were recruited.

In an exclusive SBS interview, director-general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Mike Burgess confirmed the politician was in parliament when they "sold out" Australia.

This announcement comes after the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation released their annual threat assessment this week revealing the bombshell spying case.

Mike Burgess has maintained that he won't reveal who they were, denying that this information is in the public interest.

"The former politician now, the matter is resolved, but this happened while they were a politician. I won't comment on which parliament it was. What I will say is foreign interference against the political system happens at all levels of government, local, state and federal and applies itself equally across all political parties."

A pre-election plan flagged by the Liberals would see Australia's immigration intake reduced and the number of foreign students cut.

Opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan has criticised Labor's "big Australia" policy and flagged cutting migration.

He told ABC's Insiders program that immigration is too high in the country saying 1.6 million people over four years was also too high.

Education Minister, Jason Clare says he is surprised the Labor's candidate recorded an increase in primary votes in the Dunkley by-election.

Yesterday's by-election was triggered by the death of MP Peta Murphy in December.

Newly elected, Jodie Belyea, recorded a slight increase in primary votes last night when defeating her main opposition from the Liberal party, Nathan Conroy.

Mr Clare congratulated Ms Belyea and spoke to Sky News about the results.

"I am surprised with the primary vote. It was a higher primary vote than I had expected. Peta was loved by the people of Dunkley. She was a really hard-working local member and was admired by the local community. The fact that Jodie got more votes yesterday than Peta did - what 18 months or so surprised me. I guess that's a tribute to Jodie and the work that her team did on the ground."

Former US President Donald Trump says President Joe Biden's border policies are a conspiracy to overthrow the United States.

It comes after Mr Trump won the Missouri Republican presidential nomination with nearly 98 per cent of support.

He says Mr Biden has lax security policies that have allowed millions of migrants to stream across the US border with Mexico.

While speaking at a campaign rally in North Carolina, Mr Trump condemned the current US President.

"You know, he talks about democracy. He is a danger to democracy. He is. Biden and his accomplices want to collapse the American system, nullify the will of the actual American voters, and establish a new base of power that gives them control for generations."

Chad’s military leader Mahamat Idriss Deby says he'll run in the country’s presidential elections in May.

It comes just days after opposition politician Yaya Dillo was killed in suspicious circumstances.

The Chadian government has said Mr Dilo was killed in an exchange of gunfire with security forces

But on Friday, the government confirmed that Deby’s uncle had been arrested following the incident.

In cricket,

Nathan Lyon has spun Australia to victory in the first Test against New Zealand on its fourth day at the Wellington's Basin Reserve.

Australia won the Test by 172 runs, claiming a one nil lead in the trans-Tasman Test series.

Its a contest likely to remembered for Cam Green's unbeaten first-innings.

The second test begins in Christchurch on Friday.
