Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned an arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne last night and says his government will provide support to Victorian authorities to bring the perpetrator to justice.
Victoria Police are investigating after a man reportedly entered the grounds of the inner-city synagogue in East Melbourne and then poured a flammable liquid on the front door and set it alight before fleeing the scene.
Police say about 20 worshippers were taking part in Shabbat inside the building at the time of the attack, but all managed to escape unharmed.
Liberal M-P Julian Leeser says he wants broader support from the Prime Minister to protect the Jewish community against such violence.
"It sickens me that yet again the Jewish community is having to put up with these attacks. The increase in antisemitism that people think is gone away but sadly continues unabated. We've seen world leaders all increase security for the Jewish community. That prompted Sussan Ley, Andrew Hastie and myself to write to Prime Minister Albanese three weeks ago, calling on him to take similar measures. Prime Minister Albanese has never written back to us and we're calling on him to explain what measures he's taken."
Police have also condemned a group of about 20 people who protested at the Israeli-owned restaurant Miznon in Melbourne's CBD that same night, with one person arrested.
The death toll from deadly flash floods in the southern U-S state of Texas has risen to 24 with nearly two-dozens young girls still missing from a riverfront summer camp.
The US National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency in south-central Texas following thunderstorms and torrential downpours.
Dalton Rice, city manager for the local county seat, has told reporters the extreme flooding struck before dawn with little to no warning, leaving authorities unable to issue any evacuation orders.
Authorities are searching for 23 girls listed as unaccounted for among more than 700 children at several summer camp sites near the banks of the Guadalupe River when the site was inundated by floodwaters at around 4am.
US President Donald Trump says his administration will offer their assistance.
"Oh it's terrible, the floods. It's shocking. They don't know the answer yet as to how many people but it looks like some young people have died. There'll be federal aid, we'll take care of it. We're working with the governor. It's a terrible thing."
United States President Donald Trump has signed letters to 12 countries outlining the various tariff levels they will face on goods they export to the U-S.
Mr Trump has declined to name the countries involved, but says he will name them publicly on Monday.
In a global trade war that has upended financial markets and set off a scramble among policymakers to guard their economies, the U-S President announced in April a 10 per cent base tariff rate and additional amounts for most countries, some ranging as high as 50 per cent.
These tarriffs rates are expected to come into effect on the 1st of August.
Two female police officers have been hospitalised in Sydney's west after being allegedly assaulted while responding to a mental health incident.
A 23-year-old officer was found lying unresponsive in the suburb of Bidwill last night, after being reportedly knocked unconscious for more than an hour.
New South Wales Police Superintendent Darren Batchelor says it was a shocking series of events.
"We go to these incidents on a daily basis. So when the two female officers arrived at the scene, the male was sitting on the road. They got out of the police vehicle and approached him. That male then stood up and started arguing with police in a very short timeframe he allegedly punched a female officer and kicked the other female officer. And, as we know now, the 23-year-old officer was knocked unconscious for a substantial period of time."
A 19-year-old man was then arrested at the scene and taken to Mt Druitt Police Station, before being transferred to Nepean Hospital.
In cricket, it's Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja's new opening partnership is on shaky ground after Australia's openers were again dismissed cheaply against the West Indies.
Australia slumped to 2-12 at stumps on day two of the second Test in Grenada leading by just 45 runs after bowling the Windies out for 253.
Konstas was left shattered after he was out for a duck, playing on to his stumps from a Jayden Seales delivery.
The 19-year-old, in just his fourth Test, looked better in the first innings with 25, after disappointing scores of 3 and 5 runs during the opening match of the series in Barbados.
