  • The US strikes 140 Iranian military targets...

  • Argentina is through to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals

The US military says it has hit about 140 Iranian targets, including missile and drone sites and ammunition storage facilities, in its third round of strikes this week.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps says it has struck and disabled a second vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, and targeted the US strategic air base at Al Udeid in Qatar in a missile attack.

The IRG earlier announced the Strait of Hormuz had been closed until further notice, after striking a vessel that attempted to transit the waterway through an unapproved route.

US Central Command says a civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue the journey due to an on-board fire and significant engine room damage.

It issued the following warning about impending strikes.

"Iran was provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding after being held accountable for earlier attacks on commercial vessels but has again failed. In response, the United States is imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran's ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait."

Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei vowed to avenge the death of his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes in February.

Victoria police have charged a 43-year-old man with allegedly trespassing on April 16 at the property in Thologolong where cop-killing fugitive Dezi Freeman staged his last stand.

The police said in a statement the man has been charged on summons and is due to appear at Wodonga Magistrates Court on October 13.

The individual had previously published footage of himself exploring the rural campsite where Dezi Freeman was found.

Now, he's posted again, telling followers on YouTube he believes he will only receive a fine for the alleged offending.

"I was the person who put the YouTube footage out there, which every single news on the bloody planet decided to use. And then the Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, condemned the video and said it was disheartened, but then played the exact same video at the end. So, for those of you that don't know, the police were looking for me. I had to hand myself into the police, and I have just been charged."

In Queensland, a 48-year-old man has been charged with murder after the discovery of remains believed to belong to missing Toowoomba woman Jana Armstrong.

Darling Downs District Detective Acting Inspector Brian Collins says members of the public found the remains.

He’s urged anyone with information about the case to come forward.

"Police are calling for anyone who may have been in the area between Toowoomba and Esk, specifically on the New England Highway and Esk Hampton Road, between 10:30pm on 7th July and 1:30am on the 8th of July, if they have any dashcam or CCTV footage from their homes to come forward and notify police of that footage."

Typhoon Bavi has been downgraded to a severe tropical storm after making landfall twice in eastern China.

The typhoon struck Zhejiang's coastal city of Yuhuan on Saturday night before making a second landfall in the major city of Wenzhou around midnight.

No deaths have been reported, but forecasters are warning the storm system could unleash prolonged and widespread rainfall across eastern and northern China.

As the storm approached, Wenzhou Resident Zhou Yuqiong said she was bracing for the worst.

“Of course it will have a huge impact on our daily life. I hope it leaves quickly, and it won’t linger over for a long time.”

Before reaching China, Typhoon Bavi passed Taiwan on Saturday, dumping almost 80 cm of rain in one area in the northern county of Miaoli.

Taiwan's fire department says 134 people were injured, mainly falling off motorbikes, slipping or being struck by objects.

And in World Cup news,

Argentina has booked its place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 extra-time win over Switzerland in Kansas City.

Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring before Dan Ndoye equalised to force extra time after a resilient Swiss display.

Switzerland's Breel Embolo has become the first player sent off under the World Cup's new mistaken identity law, after VAR overturned a foul decision and ruled he had dived against Argentina.

"After review, there is no foul for number five, and number seven there is a clear simulation, final decision, yellow card for number seven.”

Julián Álvarez scored in the 112th minute, with Lautaro Martínez adding a late third to seal the result.

Argentina will now face England in the semi-finals on Thursday, at 5am AEST.
