South Australian premier Peter Malinauskas says plans to find a new owner for the Whyalla steelworks are intact.
Up to 600 jobs could be lost after the steelworks went into administration, with the blast furnace closed since April.
A $10.2 million assistance package will provide workers with job help and retraining.
Premier Malinauskus told Channel Nine the steelworks will require big investment but plans to find a buyer continue.
"What Whyalla needs to see is that sale process concludes and then that new owner just does what they say they're going to do and if that happens, then by the end of the decade this town will be in a really strong position."

Western Australia's child protection policies are being scrutinised after a group of up to 15 Indigenous children were found living without adult supervision in public housing in South Hedland.
One of the children was just five years old.
An investigation by The Weekend Australian newspaper found the children had been left alone for up to a week at a time.
Police reports say the home was dirty and unhygienic.
Western Australia's Department of Child Protection is reported to have known about the situation for at least nine months.
Western Australian senator Michaelia Cash told Channel Nine the issue needs to be addressed urgently.
"Our kids — in particular our Indigenous kids — they need adults and the government to do the right thing by them; their lives are too precious."

Advocates are calling for changes to Australia's foster care system.
They say a lack of foster carers is putting thousands of children at risk.
More than 440 pairs of children's shoes were placed outside Parliament to represent the more than 44,000 children in the out-of-home care system.
Suzanne Greenwood, CEO of Families Australia, outlined some practical changes she says could make an immediate difference.
"A portable passport to care, so children can access services and supports whenever and wherever they live. Priority access to health, dental, disability and therapeutic care. Action to ease the financial and tax uncertainty facing carers and fair workplace leave arrangements for foster carers."

Hundreds of Indonesian rescuers are racing to board a passenger ship that capsized in the Java Sea.
The ship, carrying 243 people, went missing in bad weather early on Sunday.
Authorities say they have rescued 108 people but 129 people are still missing.
Six people are confirmed dead.
The National Rescue Agency says high waves and strong winds have slowed the search.

The Prime Minister is promising to extend funding for the charity Little Wings, which provides flights for rural children who need medical appointments.
Anthony Albanese met with 12-year-old Dusty Langby, who has raised more than $400,000 to support the charity.
He walked for 16 days from his hometown in New South Wales to Canberra.
He wants the government to match his fundraising.
Mr Albanese says the charity will get his support.
"So people watching this, you need to put in a bit more so that this young man achieves his dream because he absolutely deserves it, and on top of that we're extending funding for Little Wings for another two years."
