The Greens have confirmed they will vote in favour of the government's tax reform bill in the Senate this fortnight.
In exchange for their support, the Greens have won an eight-week extension to the inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme cuts until August 14.
The bill is expected to pass on Thursday, despite Greens leader Senator Larissa Waters saying it still does not go far enough to help Australians trying to purchase their own home.
The Senator says the party intends to vigorously combat the proposed NDIS cuts.
"They didn't have the guts to raise revenue with a gas export tax, or by cancelling AUKUS, or by buying just one less second-hand submarine from Donald Trump, and nor did they have the guts to tackle the super-wealthy property investors that have pushed up house prices. Instead the government is punching down on disabled people. That is disgusting."
The New South Wales government has handed down its final budget ahead of the next state election, promising relief and reform for the country's most populous state.
As well as a freeze on public transport fares, the weekly road toll cap will be cut from $60 to $50 and car registration will be reduced by $100.
$9.2 billion will go towards 260 new and upgraded schools, with $11.9 billion to build and upgrade hospitals in the state.
State treasurer Daniel Mookhey says the budget has been driven by the concerns of the people.
"We are showing people that our commitment to expense control continues, and that we remain disciplined about every dollar we spend of the public's money. I'm well and truly live that every dollar that the government decides how to spend is a dollar someone else has earned, whether it's a nurse, whether it's a hospital cleaner, whether it's a truck driver, or a small business. So we're very respectful of the public's money. From our perspective, I will say that we have delivered the tightest expense control of any Australian government since 2023."
Six people who were on board a Hantavirus affected cruise ship have left a quarantine facilty in Western Australia after six weeks in isolation.
The passengers, five Australians and one New Zealand citizen, had been exposed to hantavirus while on board the MV Hondius.
West Australian health officials say that the group consistently tested negative for the virus and remain well.
New polling has found Australians are losing confidence in world leaders.
60 percent of respondents to the 2026 Lowy Institute Poll say they have 'no confidence at all' in US President Donald Trump to do the right thing in global affairs.
More Australians are also more pessimistic about the country's economic performance now than during the pandemic or the Global Financial Crisis.
The Poll report’s author, Research Fellow Charles Lyons-Jones, says the majority of Australians now say they feel unsafe in the world.
"Well, when Australians look at the world today, they don't like what they see: conflict in the Middle East, shocking energy markets, inflation returning, and Russia's war on Ukraine raging on. That's why it's of little surprise that for the first time in the history of the Lowy Institute poll, a majority of Australians say they feel unsafe when thinking about world events."
The Australian War Memorial is opening a major new gallery focused on modern conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
All living Victoria Cross recipients have been invited, including Ben Roberts-Smith, who has been charged with multiple war crimes.
A judge has varied his bail conditions to allow him to attend the Canberra event.
He is accused of murdering or ordering the murders of five unarmed detainees while deployed in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012.

Algeria has won 2-1 against Jordan in their group J match in California, following their loss to Argentina in their World Cup opener.
Both sides had been hoping to win after losing their opening matches of the tournament.
Erling Haaland has led Norway 3-2 against Senegal's Ismaila Sarr, who both scored twice each in a tightly contested match at New Jersey.
Earlier today, Argentina's Messi became the highest scorer in World Cup history with 18 goals in his books, beating Brazilian legend Marta's historic mark of 17 goals in the Women's tournament and World Cup history.
