The Iranian Foreign Minister says the US and Iran are set to continue talks on a nuclear deal, following mediated discussions in Oman.

Iran rejected US calls to halt uranium enrichment on its territory, but said it was willing to discuss the level and purity of enrichment or a regional consortium to manage uranium enrichment.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks positively.

"I think our negotiation with the US delegation was, in fact, done in a good atmosphere. We were able to exchange our viewpoints, to express our concerns and our interests for a possible deal between the two sides on our nuclear question."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington wanted to expand the talks to cover Iran's ballistic missiles, support for armed groups around the region and "treatment of their own people".

But Iranian officials have repeatedly ruled out putting Iran's missiles up for discussion.

A senior Russian military official, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, has been rushed to hospital after being shot in Moscow.

Officials say Mr Alexeyev, deputy chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff at Russia's Defence Ministry, was shot multiple times by an attacker who fled.

Several senior Russian military officials have been assassinated since the start of the war in Ukraine, with Moscow blaming the attacks on Ukraine.

There was no comment from Kyiv, which has claimed responsibility for several of the high-ranking military officials that have been killed on Russian soil since 2022.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns says there will be a massive security operation in Sydney on Monday for Israeli President Isaac Herzog's visit.

Police want protesters to choose a different route for protests planned on Monday evening, saying those march through Town Hall, in what's been deemed a restricted area, risk being arrested.

Mr Minns says there will be a large police presence in place.

"We can't have a situation where mourners and protesters are meeting in the city's streets without police being present. We have to make sure Monday night does not devolve into some sort of conflict in Sydney’s streets. That would send a horrifying message to the rest of the world, and the rest of the country. I'm confident if common sense prevails, and people approach Monday with a bit of respect for other people that live in our city, then we can get through it."

The Palestine Action Group says it has continued discussions with police, and protesters are seeking to proceed with a peaceful march.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has celebrated a new era of strengthened relations with Australia after signing an historic treaty with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Jakarta.

Announced in November, the Australia-Indonesia Treaty on Common Security represents a pivot in Jakarta’s foreign policy, signalling a move away from its traditional stance of non-alignment toward a more integrated defence partnership.

During the press conference, President Subianto reflects on the growing relationship between the two countries.

"And today, Prime Minister Albanese and I reaffirmed Indonesia's close relation with Australia to continue strengthen Indonesia - Indonesia's and Australia partnership through the signing of the Treaty of common security. This treaty reflects the commitment of both countries to continue strengthening its cooperation."

A renewed search for accused police killer Dezi Freeman in the Victorian high country has wrapped up with police finding no trace of the fugitive.

The exhaustive five-day search saw more than 100 police officers, volunteers and cadaver dogs comb through Mount Buffalo National Park for any signs of life from Mr Freeman.

Police now suspect he died only hours after allegedly killing two police officers and fleeing into bushland near the Victorian town of Porepunkah back in August.

Police say there has been no proof of life recorded since he fled.

Australian Jock Landale has stunned on his NBA debut for the Atlanta Hawks, delivering a double-double and hitting a crucial three-pointer in a 121-119 win over Utah.

Landale recorded 26 points and 11 rebounds in the Hawks' tense home victory.

The 30-year-old Boomers star was traded from Utah to Atlanta on Thursday, just a day after he was traded from Memphis to the Jazz.

He hit his fifth three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining to put the Hawks ahead, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored the final go-head basket with 1.3 seconds left.
