A man is being interviewed by police over the death of a pedestrian outside Melbourne's comic convention.

Victoria Police say he was arrested at the scene by an off-duty officer after his car allegedly mounted a curb and struck at least two people outside the Ascot Vale centre, killing one and seriously injuring a second.

The second pedestrian remains in critical condition in hospital.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy says the 33 year old driver of the car is well known to police.

"We're still yet to determine if drugs, alcohol, speed are involved but they will all form part of our investigation. As I said, the vehicle has travelled a significant distance along the footpath, which is extremely odd."

Pakistan has tightened transport and media access around the capital as the prospect of new US-Iran talks hangs in the balance.

The tightened arrangements appear to be a bid by authorities to create a relatively controllable environment and position itself as an absolute safe haven for the talks.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson has said no dates have been finalised for the next round of negotiations and that consultations are ongoing for a mutually agreed schedule.

Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme National Security Council is understood to be reviewing the proposals for peace presented by the Americans, while President Donald Trump has continued to assert the US is in the dominant position.

"Well, they got a little cute as they have been doing for 47 years. Nobody ever took them on. We took them on. They have no Navy. They have no Air Force. They have no leaders. They have no nothing. Actually, their leaders are - it is regime change. You call that enforced regime change. But we're talking to them. They wanted to close up the Strait again, you know, as they've been doing for years. And they can't blackmail us."

Police in Ukraine have shot dead a gunman who killed at least six people and took hostages in a supermarket in Kyiv.

The head of Ukraine's Interior Ministry, Ihor Klymenko, says the man was confronted by special tactical police units, who stormed the store in the Holosiivskyi district after attempts to contact him through a negotiator failed.

Police believe the man killed at least four people before he went into the supermarket, where he then killed another person inside.

Neighbours of the suspected shooter - like Hanna Kulyk - have expressed their shock at what has happened, and shared they knew him as being withdrawn and quiet.

"He didn’t want to communicate with anyone. When I sat outside on the street - he knew me by my face - he would greet me briefly and hurry off to run his errands. He wasn’t close with his neighbours or anyone else."

Debate is underway in Tasmania to decide on a new name for the seat of Franklin, whose boundaries are being redrawn in an electorate shakeup.

One of the names being considered is Truganini, whose death in 1876 led to the colonial Tasmanian government falsely declaring the island's Aboriginal population extinct.

Tasmania is now the sole state without an electorate named after an Indigenous person or place.

But historian Cassandra Pybus and Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre campaigns manager Nala Mansell both say that part of the country is not associated with Truganinni, and naming it after her might perpetuate more myths about Indigenous history in the state.

Older Australians have been urged to take advantage of a vaccine for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus that has now been made freely available by the federal government.

Health Minister Mark Butler says the immunisation shot for the virus that normally costs $300 will now be offered at no cost to those aged over 75, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged over 60.

Almost 178,000 cases were reported in Australia last year, including more than 40,000 in adults aged over 60.

Immunisation Foundation of Australia co-founder Catherine Hughes says the virus can hit older and vulnerable Australians especially hard.

"That means more than 2 million Australians will now be eligible for a free RSV vaccine. And that's not a small number. It's a very significant step in the protection of older Australians. RSV isn't just a kid's disease. Older Australians are among those most at risk for serious illness."

To sport and in netball news,

The Melbourne Vixens have powered to the top of the Super Netball standings with a victory against the previously unbeaten Adelaide Thunderbirds John Cain Arena.

The Thunderbirds were ahead for most of the game, but the Vixens ultimately blasted past to win by six goals - 56-50.

Meanwhile, the Queensland Firebirds have celebrated their 30th anniversary in style.

They've broken a year-long Super Netball home drought to beat the New South Wales Swifts 77-66.
