A man holding a shotgun has been arrested near Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan says the man was stopped after being seen running from his car toward the U.S. Capitol building that will host the State of the Union speech next week.

The Chief says it remains unclear whether members of Congress were the target.

But he says it is clear the 18 year old was well prepared.

"This individual had a tactical vest on. He also had tactical gloves, and when we looked in the vehicle, he had a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask in the vehicle. He was also - like I mentioned earlier - the shotgun was loaded; he had additional rounds on his person."

Former Australian captains Allan Border and Steve Waugh have added their names to an open letter written about the conditions in prison for former international Imran Khan.

The 73-year-old was one of the finest players of his generation before moving into politics, serving as his country's prime minister and then being sentenced to a long prison term.

Recent reports suggest Khan is experiencing poor medical treatment, visitation bans and neglect, prompting his former opponents to speak out.

The letter directly appeals to the Pakistan government to ensure Khan has adequate medical attention and humane detention that meets international standards.

Veteran United States civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson has died peacefully at the age of 84.

The Baptist minister had been a civil rights activist since the 1960s, when he marched with Martin Luther King Junior and helped fundraise for the cause.

Speaking in 2021, Dr Noelle Trent from the National Civil Rights Museum said Reverend Jackson's legacy, had helped reshape America.

"He really did help bring the awareness of the Black political struggle forward. And I don't think that we can underestimate the impact of him, just the act of running. He wasn't fully successful, but I don't know if that mattered, right, that he showed that there were that there's a need for it. That he really did lay the groundwork for Barack Obama to be a viable candidate."

Police have concluded another intensive search of a rural South Australian property where a four-year-old boy vanished almost five months ago.

They say no new evidence has been found in the case of Gus Lamont.

The disappearance was declared a major crime on February 5th.

At that time, South Australian Police Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said someone living at the remote station was a suspect in the case.

"At this time, despite all of the combined search efforts, we have found no evidence, physical or otherwise, to suggest that Gus has merely wandered off from the home from the Oak Park homestead... I do want to stress, however, that Gus’ parents are not suspects in his disappearance.”

Mexico will play a warm up match against Australia on May 30 ahead of the World Cup.
