Australia will join crisis talks in Jordan this week as concern grows over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Early Childhood Education Minister Anne Aly will travel to Amman this week to join an international conference being hosted by Egypt, Jordan and the United Nations.

Dr Aly has described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic".

She's told SBS that Australia's policy response so far has been appropriate.

"We are focused on continuing to call for a ceasefire, continuing to do our bit to provide humanitarian aid to respond to the devastating crisis, and to working towards a two-state solution as the only pathway to an everlasting and sustainable peace."

Nine people have been killed in India in a suspected militant attack.

Police say militants fired on a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims, causing it to fall into a deep gorge in the Indian federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

At least 33 people have survived the crash.

Police have said in a statement that the injured have been moved to nearby hospitals, and a search for the attackers launched.

Far right parties have made major gains in elections for the European Union.

Nationalist, populist and Eurosceptic parties are on course to win just under a quarter of seats in the EU assembly.

The result is being seen as the result of voter disquiet over spiralling prices and migration issues.

But European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, whose centre-right European People's Party appears likely to remain the largest party, says the seat gains might not necessarily translate into influence on EU policy.

"We are the strongest party, we are the anchor of stability, and voters acknowledged our leadership during the last five years. And this is a great message to all of us."

The opposition has confirmed it intends to dump Australia's 2030 target to cut emissions and overturn the country's ban on nuclear power instead, believing it is the way to reduce emissions.

Opposition climate change spokesperson Ted O'Brien says the government's 2030 target is unachievable.

The plan has been met with dismay by conservation groups and the government, who say such a move could risk Australia's membership of the Paris Agreement.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says it also shows the opposition would take Australia backwards on climate change.

"If you walk away from the Paris accord you'll be standing with Libya, Yemen and Iran, and against all our of major trading partners and all of our important allies. Peter Dutton has never believed in taking action on climate change and the opposition has been a mess."

.

The Australian government has launched a new anti-vaping campaign.

The ads will run across TV, social media, radio, cinema among other places until December.

Health Minister Mark Butler says the $63 million "give up for good" advertising blitz will target the harmful impacts of vaping for the first time.

He says it will also address the use of cigarettes after almost a decade.

Emergency services will soon begin assessing damage to river towns near Sydney as floods recede and residents return home.

The immediate threat of more damaging rainfall has eased, with the Bureau of Meteorology not forecasting any further significant falls over the next few days.

But flood warnings remain in place at the Hawkesbury River, where 600 residents in low-lying areas were ordered to evacuate on Friday night.

NSW SES Acting Commissioner Deb Platz says the priority is to get people back to normal as soon as possible.

A supermarket giant has introduced new limits on the purchase of eggs following a bird flu outbreak in Victoria.

Coles customers in every state and territory can now only buy a maximum of two egg cartons, with the exception of Western Australia.

Coles says the limit is temporary but it's not revealed how long it is expected to last.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt says there is no need for concern.

"The restriction on egg sales from Coles is obviously a precautionary measure, and I would certainly encourage everyone to be respectful when they're shopping."

Carlton now sits second on the A-F-L ladder after a strong showing against Essendon on the weekend.

They're now being billed as second favourites for the premiership after fighting through injury woes and a tough draw in the first half of the season.

Coach Michael Voss has told Fox Sports the Blues deserve the hype.

"We are where we deserve - the ladder doesn't lie - and we've had to do it with some challenges, so it hasn't been smooth sailing. As I said, we've been facing these top teams week after week after week."
