Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the federal government doesn't currently believe there are any Australians caught up in a conflict in Papua New Guinea.
Shops and businesses have been attacked and set on fire in the capital and people have reportedly been killed after police went on strike over pay.
Authorities say property in Port Moresby has been looted by opportunists after events spiralled out of control.
Mr Albanese says the government is constantly receiving updates from Papua New Guinea.
"The High Commissioner in Port Moresby is keeping a very close eye on what is occurring there making sure that Australians are looked after. We continue to urge calm. We haven't had any requests from the PNG government at this time. But we of course, are friends in Papua New Guinea. We have a great relationship with them."

Jodie Belyea has been named as Labor's candidate for the upcoming federal by-election in the Victorian seat of Dunkley.
Ms Belyea is the founder of volunteer group Women's Spirit which helps to support disadvantaged women.
The by-election was triggered by the death of Labor MP Peta Murphy, who died in December after a long battle with cancer.
Ms Belyea has paid tribute to the late MP.
"Peta Murphy was an incredibly talented and passionate member that advocated hard for this community. I am not going to necessarily be Peta but I am going to lean into her legacy committed to making a difference. I have big shoes to fill. And over the next few weeks you are going to see me campaigning on the cost of living health and Medicare and affordable housing."

A date is yet to be set for the poll in the seat on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, but expected to be announced in coming weeks.
Independent MP Allegra Spender has criticised the Coalition following suggestions a 2035 climate target could be difficult to adopt.
Nationals Leader David Littleproud and some Liberal frontbenchers have questioned the need for the 2035 emissions reduction target of more than 70 per cent.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton is under pressure to reveal his energy and climate policy, amid speculation the Coalition may be also reconsidering its net zero emmissions by 2050 commitment.
Ms Spender told Sky News it's not surprising.
"If Liberal Party members and coalition members are saying don't take a 2035 target. Well, I can't say I'm surprised that is their form because they're not showing themselves to be serious about climate action. And that is what my community wants serious action on climate change because it has a huge impact both on our environment but on our economy and on our children's future."

A new report has found the owner of social media platform X has made significant cuts to global trust and safety staff.
The eSafety Commissioner report suggests trust and safety staff have been reduced by a third, including an 80 per cent reduction in the number of safety engineers.

And I've got the same Johnny be good I filled a dance floor and I've got home from the golf trip with the boys and started singing lessons and here we are 31 years later, still doing Elvis anyway there's so many different eras of Elvis there's always something someone loves, whether it's the gospel the rock and roll the movies. Everyone has seen an Elvis movie and with it, how cool was that? They'll do 31 movies as well."

Record-breaking Western Sydney Wanderers striker Sophie Harding is adamant the club can continue to turn heads after a surprise surge up the A-League Women ladder under former Socceroo Robbie Hooker.
Harding broke the club's record for goals in a season last week, taking her tally for the campaign to eight by bagging twice in an 2-0 away win against Perth.
The forward shares the lead for the ALW golden boot with Canberra's Vesna Milivojevic.
