A man has been shot during a home invasion in Sydney’s south-west.

He's understood to be in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police have been told the 25 year old resident was shot twice after being confronted by eight men wearing face coverings, who forced entry into the home.

Petrol was then poured through the home – but not ignited - before the men left in two separate cars.

A US plan for a Gaza ceasefire has won support from the United Nations Security Council.

While Russia abstained from the vote, the remaining 14 Council members voted in favour of a resolution supporting a three-phase ceasefire plan, laid out by US President Joe Biden.

Hamas says it welcomes the adoption of the resolution and that it's ready to co-operate with mediators over implementation.

US Ambassador to the U-N Linda Thomas-Greenfield says their cooperation could end the war immediately.

"Today this Council sent a clear message to Hamas -- accept the ceasefire deal on the table. Israel has already agreed to this deal and the fighting could stop today if Hamas would do the same. I repeat, the fighting could stop today."

Ninety states and organisations have so far registered for a summit in Switzerland that aims to pave the way for peace in Ukraine.

Switzerland agreed to host the summit at the behest of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Russia has dismissed it as a waste of time, and has not been invited to participate.

Swiss President Viola Amherd says Russia will eventually need to come to the table.

“The expectations for the conference are clear: we want to start a broad-based process with regard to a lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine to create the conditions for a future peace summit with the participation of Russia. That will only succeed with the interaction of nations. This coming weekend, it will be about finding a common denominator for this endeavour and making concrete progress on individual issues.”

Australia's climate debate is heating up again.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has insisted Australia will meet its targets, after opposition climate change spokesperson Ted O'Brien said the government's targets were unachievable.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has also maintained the Coalition remains committed to the Paris agreement and to reducing emissions.

But Labor Senator Murray Watt has argued the Coalition cannot be trusted - citing senior minister Barnaby Joyce's statement that Australia should not be part of the Paris accord as evidence of the party's true intentions.

"I don't know why anyone would believe the Coalition on anything to do with climate change or energy targets. I mean, it wasn't that long ago that we were in the middle of climate wars in the Coalition and energy policies that never got landed. And it seems that we're heading back that way again."

A long-awaited gambling ban has now come into force in Australia.

Gamblers are now unable to use their credit cards and digital currency to fund online betting.

Sports Minister Annika Wells says it's just the start of what the government has planned following a parliamentary inquiry into problem gambling.

"It's a really important development kicking off today. We are determined to reduce the harm of online gambling and this is in addition to what we've already done with Betstop and what we're going to continue to do to respond to that report."

Men are being urged to get help for their mental and physical health challenges.

New figures show about 50 men - or two every hour - die every day from preventable causes in Australia.

Four-in-five heart-related deaths under the age of 65 are men, while suicide is the leading cause for those under the age of 55.

Hundreds of people have gathered in northern New South Wales to remember a notorious massacre of Aboriginal people in 1838.

28 Aboriginal men, women and children were killed by a group of 11 settlers at Myall Creek station in June 1838.

Seven of the perpetrators were later put on trial, convicted and executed in a national first.

Three fans who racially abused Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr at a match in Valencia last year have each been sentenced to eight months in prison.

The individuals have also been given a two-year stadium ban from any venue hosting LaLiga matches, or games held under the jurisdiction of the Spanish football federation.

The conviction of the trio over the incident in May 2023 is the first for racist abuse at a football match in Spain.
