The leader of the Greens in Tasmania says the party has done well in the state election and is likely to hold between three and six seats.

The Tasmanian Liberals have won the most number of seats but not the 18 needed to claim a majority.

Despite indications of a hung parliament, Liberal leader Jeremy Rockliff claimed victory.

The final make-up of the parliament may not be known for a couple of weeks.

Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff says there's been solid support for the party.

"Our message this election was that change is needed and change is possible. And we're fully committed to stepping into the next parliament with his in mind."

At least eight people are reported dead after strikes in central Gaza.

Richard Marles: Well, we're not because Paul Keating doesn't speak for the Australian government and that's the fundamental point here and we're not going to stop people from meeting former leaders if that's what they want to do. The meeting that mattered was with our foreign minister and in that meeting the process of stabilising our relationship with China continued."
