A heatwave warning has been issued for this weekend across four states in Australia's south-east.

South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania are all expected to experience stifling temperatures from today to Monday.

In South Australia, the state government has activated a code red response to unlock additional services available to people sleeping rough.

The Bureau of Meteorology is urging everyone to take extra precautions over the weekend.

"It's a three day period of unusually warm daytime and nighttime conditions that is really hard for the body to recover from. It's a sign to us that we need to stay cool, stay hydrated. And if you or someone you know is particularly sensitive to heat, check in with your local health services to see what extra precautions you can take across this weekend."

The United Kingdom says it will join forces with the United States to build a maritime corridor for the transfer of critical humanitarian aid into Gaza.

But UK foreign minister David Cameron says the proposed new harbour would take time to build on Gaza's coastline.

He has urged Israel to open their port at Ashdod to allow many more trucks of aid each day to enter Gaza.

"That is in Israel, but that's a working port. It could take aid now that would increase the amount of aid and that aid can then be driven into Gaza. That would make a real difference. And we need to make a real difference right now... This is frustrating because we need more aid to go in. In the last few days we've averaged about 120 trucks of aid going in. We need more like 500."

A woman has died after being pinned to a wall by a bus in Brisbane's city centre.

Queensland Police say their initial inquiries suggest the bus was travelling along Edward Street in central Brisbane before it left the road and struck the 18 year old female pedestrian.

Five people on board the bus, including the driver, have also been taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

A 33-year-old Canberra man has pleaded guilty to robbery with an offensive weapon over the theft of tennis player Nick Kyrgios' Tesla last year.

The court has heard that the man allegedly pointed a gun at Mr Kyrgios' mother before demanding the keys to the car.

Police say he was arrested shortly after, when Mr Kyrgios used an app to control the car's speed.

The case is set to return to court next month.

An inmate accidentally released from Long Bay correctional centre in Sydney will be returned to the jail after he was found in Bondi.

New South Wales Police say the 30 year old was located at a hotel in the eastern Sydney suburb after an extensive search in the area.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the man was meant to stay in custody after facing court but a paperwork error meant he was allowed to leave Long Bay.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has said there would be a full review to determine what went wrong.

A couple from Athens has become one of the first to marry in Greece since the legalisation of same sex marriage in February.

Danai Deligeorges and Alexia Beziki have wed in front of friends and family at Athens City Hall, with the crowd erupting into applause when the couple said their vows.

Alexia Beziki says the historic vote in parliament in February was a watershed moment for them and many others, after decades of campaigning in the socially conservative country where the Orthodox Church has long held sway.

"I felt seen. I felt seen, and I was very happy to see that other people, friends, whatsoever, straight people, you know, they also felt that we were seen. So it was not like a victory of gay people, it was a victory also for all the people who believe that all the individuals should be seen for what they choose."

Australia's peak law body says the country's regional and rural communities are missing out on legal advice because of a shortage of qualified solicitors.

The Law Council says the shortage could be addressed through Higher Education Loan Program debt reduction and indexation relief, to incentivise graduates to move outside of Australia's major capital cities.

The initiative would be similar to the scheme offered to doctors, nurses and teachers who live and work in the bush.

To sport,

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson has been fined $20,000 and a two-match ban for his outburst towards St Kilda's Jimmy Webster and Dougal Howard.

Clarkson was found guilty of 'conduct unbecoming' for allegedly using a homophobic slur at the quarter time break last week.

AFL officials say the ban has been wholly suspended.

But if he is again found guilty of a similar offence before the end of the 2025 season, that penalty would be reinstated, and he'd attract additional sanctions.
