  • David Crisafulli to become Queensland's 41st premier.
  • Israel unapologetic after striking military targets in Iran and avoiding nuclear sites.
  • Via Sistina wins the Cox Plate at Melbourne's Moonee Valley.

David Crisafulli will become Queensland's next Premier, with the Liberal National party claiming a narrow victory in the state election.

The grandson of Italian immigrants who were northern Queensland cane farmers led an election campaign focused on crime, health, housing and cost of living.

Queensland's 41st premier has vowed he will start work immediately to implement his campaign promises.

These include a controversial "adult time for adult crime" policy that would see young offenders jailed for lengthy sentences for committing serious crimes.

"To the people of this great state, I have worked and lived at both ends of it, and I love every inch of it and to let them know.”

Four Iranian soldiers have been killed in a series of Israeli raids on the country in retaliation for Iran's missile attacks earlier this month,

The Israel Defense Forces says they targeted missile factories and other sites near the capital Tehran and western Iran.

The air raids have avoided Iran's most sensitive oil and nuclear targets after urgent calls from allies and neighbours for restraint.

But I-D-F spokesperson Daniel Hagari says that does not mean Israel is going to stay silent.

"Our message is clear. All those who threaten the state of Israel and seek to drag the region into wider escalation will pay a heavy price."

A man has died in hospital after setting himself on fire in Sydney's Pittwater earlier this month.

New South Wales Police say the 61 year old poured the contents of a jerry can over himself EARLIER this month as he smoked a cigarette in front of officers who had been called to his boat for a welfare check.

They say while police officers immediately put out the fire and gave the man first aid , he suffered significant burns.

A critical incident team is investigating the circumstances.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia remains committed to a green economy, following the end of the CHOGM summit in Samoa.

Pacific leaders used the event to remind bigger countries of the threat they face from rising sea levels with Tuvalu releasing a report pointing the finger at Australia, Canada and the UK for emitting a dis-pportionate amount of greenhouse gases.

Mr Albanese says a plan to protect 30 per cent of the world's oceans by 2030 would be "one of the major initiatives" coming from the forum.

But he says Australia can't "flick a switch and act immediately" - though it is committed to reducing carbon pollution to net zero.

"We are all members of the same family: the Pacific family. A security threat to any one of us is a threat to all of us."

Indonesian patrol ships have driven away a Chinese coast guard boat from a disputed area of the South China Sea for the third time in a week.

Indonesia’s Maritime Security Agency has released a video showing the Indonesian ship following a Chinese vessel.

Chinese ships have regularly entered the area Indonesia calls the North Natuna Sea, fuelling tensions between the countries.

Indonesia does not have a formal territorial dispute with China over the South China Sea but has become increasingly protective of its rights in the region.

To sport, and Via Sistina has won the Cox Plate at Melbourne's Moonee Valley in a dominating performance, with Jockey James McDonald riding the seven-year-old mare from the middle of the pack.

The victory completes an incredible comeback after a mid-week trackwork accident nearly put her out of the race.

The mare is trained by Chris Waller.
