Two people have been arrested by police and then released without being charged, as police hunt for a man accused of killing two officers.

Hundreds of officers are in Porepunkah in Victoria, searching for the fourth day for suspect, Dezi Freeman.

Deputy Commissioner of Regional Operations, Russell Barrett, saysif anyone is helping him, they could face criminal charges.

"If anyone has information, they should contact Crimestoppers immediately. We would say if people know where he is or sight him, call triple zero immediately. We need community support in this operation, it is our highest priority to arrest the offender."

17 others people were wounded.

The attacker took their life and Mr Fletcher says he hopes his family and others can recover from their losses.

"Yesterday, a coward decided to take our 8-year-old son Fletcher away from us. We will never be allowed to hold him, talk to him, play with him, and watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was on the path to becoming."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia's Defence Minister, Richard Marles had a good meeting with the American Defence Secretary.

Minister Marles met with the American Vice President and other officials, too.

There has been confusion this week, after a US official said there was no formal meeting.

But Prime Minister Albanese says there was a meeting and it was positive.

"He met the vice president, he met the defense secretary. He met senior people in the Trump administration, and that's a good thing. And then he came home. That's a good thing, and it was very positive. The meetings, Richard got back yesterday morning, straight into parliament, straight down to the job."

And the world number one ranked tennis player, Jannik Sinner has beaten Australian Alexei Popyrin.

Sinner will now go to the third round of the U-S Open.

"It was a very, very solid performance, I feel like we both didn't serve very well today. We had a lot of rallies from the back of the court. Where  today I felt quite comfortable and obviously very happy to be in the next round."
